When we chose the theme for this year's Rooted in Rhythm, we weren't just chasing an aesthetic or a cultural moment; although October 3rd being Mean Girls Day didn't hurt. 

 

We asked ourselves, what does our community need right now? The answer came quickly and it came in pink but, this time, pink came with a name attached to it, Destiny.

 

​There are events you plan because they make sense on paper. Then there are events you plan because someone you loved deserved more time, and you decide that honoring them is the only way to move forward, this is that event. 

 

Destiny was 30 years old when stage 4 metastatic breast cancer took her from us. She was vibrant, creative, full of vision, and bursting with ideas about what was possible when music, community, and purpose came together in one space. She had dreams about creating experiences that meant something; about gathering people together under one roof and reminding them that life, even the hardest parts of it, is worth celebrating.

One of those dreams was a festival exactly like this one. She never got to see it happen but we are going to make sure the world does.We chose this theme because we have someone to honor. Her life was cut far too short by something that affects so many lives.

 

Destiny  believed in the power of creativity and community with everything she had and we are choosing to make sure her legacy lives far beyond this one night.
